Troubleshooting

Fix It Before You Order

A surprising share of “dead” barrier gates come back to life with a fifteen-minute check. Work through these before you buy a replacement, and call us if none of them land.

Talk to a technician
The arm won’t raise, but the motor runs

Almost always a balance or coupling issue rather than a motor fault. Check the spring tension against the arm length in the manual: a replacement arm that is longer or heavier than the original will need the balance reset. Then inspect the drive coupling and the flange bolts for shear.

The gate opens on its own or won’t close

Suspect the safety loop first. A loop with a break in the sealant, water ingress, or sensitivity set too high will hold the gate open indefinitely. Disconnect the loop detector at the controller: if the gate then closes normally, the fault is in the loop or the detector, not the barrier.

Intermittent operation in wet or cold weather

Check the cabinet seal and the cable gland where control wiring enters the housing. Moisture on the controller board and corroded terminal blocks produce exactly this pattern. Where power is unstable, a battery backup power supply keeps the controller from resetting mid-cycle.

The controller shows a fault code

MGC-PRO controllers report faults through the display and the SM01 hand-held service module. Note the exact code before you power-cycle, because clearing it destroys the evidence. Send us the code and the gate model and we’ll tell you whether it’s a sensor, a limit setting, or a board.

The arm is damaged but the gate is fine

Arms are the consumable, and that’s by design. Varioboom sections, foam covers, flanges and LED strips are all replaceable individually, so a strike usually costs an arm section rather than a drive unit. Measure the existing arm and confirm the flange pattern before ordering.

I need a part that’s no longer made

Send us whatever you have: the old part number, the nameplate photo, or the failed component itself. We cross-reference across Magnetic AutoControl, Alvarado, FAAC and the rest of our lines to find the correct current equivalent, including legacy MIB and MBE hardware.

Preventive Maintenance

Keep the Gate Off the Fault List

Monthly

Visual check of the arm, foam cover and LED strip for strike damage. Confirm the arm sits level when closed and that the cabinet door seals.

Quarterly

Test loop detection with a vehicle at low speed, verify the safety reverse, and check terminal blocks for corrosion or loose conductors.

Annually

Re-balance the arm against spring tension, inspect the drive coupling and bearings, and replace the backup battery before it fails on its own schedule.

Stock the parts that fail. Sites that keep a spare arm section, a loop detector and a backup power supply on the shelf turn a multi-day outage into a same-morning fix. Ask us to build a recommended spares list for your specific gate model.
